Westchester County Parks, Recreation and Conservation is hiring a Senior Curator.
We are responsible for managing over 18,000 acres of land consisting mostly of forested areas that support an abundance of wildlife species. The Senior Curator will contribute to the management and conservation of wildlife through the implementation and growth of existing wildlife programs and the creation of new wildlife programs and projects on an as needed basis.
 
Responsibilities
  • Extensive research and data collection of wildlife management issues
  • Obtain necessary State and Federal Wildlife Permits for management of wildlife County wide in our parks;
  • Assist with the implementation and the daily operations of  the County-wide Canada Geese Management Program, Deer Management Program and other wildlife management programs
  • Prepare digital maps using Geographic Information Systems, Global Positioning Systems, and Archive technology
  • Identify and quantify nuisance wildlife and the effect on biodiversity or public safety
  • Identify wildlife species and their habitat relationships 
  • Present to other municipal and government agencies on deer management etc. 
  • Collaborate with local conservation organizations and networks and partake in regional wildlife and conservation projects and efforts
  • Liaison to conservation boards and working group meetings for partnership networks
  • Collection of biological samples
  • Train Curators and other Conservation support staff in wildlife management and communication of benefits of programs to park patrons
  • Supervision and management of volunteers and hourly wildlife/natural resource staff
  • Coordinate population counts including spotlighting, and other methods
  • Monitor deer enclosures, target species, nests, and other features for evaluating program effectiveness
  • Interface with hunters, volunteers, and the general public regarding wildlife issues
  • Demonstration and lecture preparation and participation  in public education programs by developing publications, web pages, field training monitoring protocols, writing informational articles and creating signs  related to wildlife management
  • Conduct on-the-job training for egg oiling, browse impact/pellet count surveys, or other wildlife management techniques 
  • Network with local and state agencies on regional wildlife management issues
  • Maintain records and prepare reports of research and extensive collective data required for compliance with wildlife management permits
  • Remain up-to-date on wildlife related trainings and licenses
  • Use of computer applications and database software in performing work assignments and data collections
 
Requirements
  • Bachelor’s Degree and two years of experience in which the primary function of the position was nature museum operation, outdoor museum interpretation, museum interpretation, or substantially similar work, which included one year of experience that included conducting biodiversity field research and field data compilation.  
  • Comprehensive knowledge of wildlife management techniques and population dynamics and emerging wildlife diseases
  • Thorough knowledge of management strategies and wildlife issues
  • Good knowledge of the requirements of NY State wildlife permits 
  • Proficient with GIS tools such as ArcPro, FieldMaps, etc. 
 
Salary Range
$71,800 - $89,305
