June 6, 2025 – “The American Civil War: A War of Firsts” is now open at Lasdon Park, Arboretum and Veterans Memorial in Katonah. The exhibit, which debuted on April 27, features interactive displays and photos that explore the significant innovations in warfare, medicine, weaponry, transportation and other vital advancements that emerged during the Civil War.
Some of those advances included the use of submarines, iron-clad vessels, telegrams to convey messages to field troops, and the Gatling gun, which would later become the first widely successful machine gun. Visitors to “The American Civil War: A War of Firsts” can see actual equipment and clothes from the war, such as a saddle, rifles from a variety of manufacturers, a cannonball, bugles and swords, as well as Civil War photos and the recreation of a bivouac camp.

County Executive Ken Jenkins said: “The Civil War reshaped the United States in countless ways, including having prompted significant advancements across many crucial fields. The exhibit’s thoughtful design, historical setting and powerful images make it a compelling and respectful tribute to the lasting impact of those four horrible years.”
Commissioner of the Department of Parks, Recreation and Conservation Kathy O’Connor said: “The Veterans Memorial’s Eagle Courtyard and Trail of Honor also let visitors remember and reflect on those who served and fought so bravely in the US Military. We encourage people to stop at both sites to pay tribute to our soldiers.”
The exhibit is highlighted by a display of the uniform worn by Union general Clinton B. Fisk, as well as authentic pieces of clothing worn by Confederate troops, Union troops, and soldiers from volunteer units and militias.
The Veterans Museum is hosting a series of related events throughout the exhibit’s run, including guest speakers, educational workshops and family-friendly activities. Visit Lasdon Park to stay up-to-date on upcoming events.
The museum is open Wednesdays through Sundays from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. throughout 2025. Admission is free.
