April 28, 2025 – “The American Civil War: A War of Firsts” is open at Lasdon Park, Arboretum and Veterans Memorial in Katonah. The exhibit and interactive displays explore the significant breakthroughs in warfare, medicine, weaponry, transportation and other vital advancements that emerged during the Civil War.
The exhibit opened with an engaging and thought-provoking presentation led by renowned presenter Pat Chaisson. This special session of Pat’s Chats, titled “Strange, Unusual, and Innovative Weapons of the U.S. Civil War,” showcased the unexpected and innovative weaponry introduced during this transformative era.
County Executive Ken Jenkins said: “Though the Civil War was devastating, it spurred remarkable progress in a variety of important areas. The conflict was tragic, especially for the countless lives lost—but from that tragedy came a turning point in the fight for racial justice in our country. As Westchester’s first Black County Executive, I recognize the deep, painful legacy of slavery and the Civil War’s lasting impact on the Black community. The exhibit’s purpose, setting, and community connection make it a dignified and compelling way to honor that history and showcase the enduring importance of the Civil War.”
Commissioner of the Department of Parks, Recreation and Conservation Kathy O’Connor said: “The Veterans Memorial is a beautiful and fitting venue for this amazing exhibit. The tranquil surroundings encourage thoughtful contemplation and emotional connection to the historical content. As a space dedicated to veterans, it aligns perfectly with the legacy of the Civil War.”
The museum will also host a series of related events throughout the exhibit’s run, including guest speakers, educational workshops and family-friendly activities. For details about the full schedule of events, visit Lasdon Park, Arboretum and Veterans Memorial.
The museum will be open throughout 2025 and run Wednesdays through Sundays from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Admission is free.
