May 15, 2024 – The first ever Mount Vernon Bird Day, sponsored by Bronx River – Sound Shore Audubon Society, will be held at Willson’s Woods Park, Saturday, June 8, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The event will be located in picnic areas one through three and will include small-group bird walks by the river, a nature scavenger hunt and various hands-on activity stations that will educate attendees on the birds in the area. Additionally, a live bird demonstration by Greenburgh Nature Center will take place from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Westchester County Executive, George Latimer said, “As a Mount Vernon native, I’m thrilled the Bronx River – Sound Shore Audubon Society is sponsoring this event in Willson’s Woods Park as it is a great educational opportunity for the area. Residents of all ages can learn about the birds in the neighborhood through engaging activities in a natural setting.”

Commissioner of the Department of Parks, Recreation and Conservation Kathy O’Connor said, “This event blends two of the Parks Departments’ divisions together – Parks and Conservation - and it is a great opportunity for those who are not familiar with the nature of our parks to learn about it.”

Bronx River – Sound Shore Audubon Society President, Sandra Morrissey said, “Our goal is to get young and old alike excited about birds by introducing them to the birds in their neighborhood. There will be a bird-spotting walk, hands-on learning activities and a nature scavenger hunt. The Greenburgh Nature Center will be there with live birds for an up-close look. Fun and educational for all! Please join us.”

Parking and event are free. Willson’s Woods Park is located at 8 Bradford Road, Mount Vernon, NY 10553.
