April 19, 2024 – Earlier today, Deputy County Executive Ken Jenkins, addressed the student participants of the 2024 Westchester County Envirothon at Croton Point Park in Croton-on-Hudson.

Fifteen public and private high schools across the Lower Hudson Valley were represented by 30 teams, each competing in the Envirothon and testing their knowledge of environmental topics including Forestry, Soils and Land-Use, Wildlife, Current Issue, Aquatics and Oral Presentation. Winners today were Rye Country Day A in Forestry, Yonkers High School A in Soil and Land-Use, Rye Neck High School A in Current Issue, Fox Lane High School A in Wildlife, Ossining High School A in Aquatics, John Jay High School A in Oral Presentation, and Mount Academy A was the overall champion.
Westchester County Executive George Latimer said, “The dedication to our environment students portray in the Envirothon every year is impressive and admirable. Year after year, students are tasked to present and answer a variety of conservation topics and do so with ease. Congratulations to everyone who participated and to Ossining High School A who will represent Westchester County at the NYS Envirothon.”
Commissioner of the Westchester County Department of Parks, Recreation and Conservation, Kathy O’Connor said, “Croton Point Park is one of our most diverse parks and is a great setting to host this year’s Envirothon. I’m once again impressed by the students’ knowledge and know the future of Westchester’s parks and environment is in great hands.”
Westchester County Planning Commissioner Blanca P. Lopez said, “We are thrilled to grow our regional education efforts with exemplary collaboration across five Hudson Valley counties, welcoming Ulster County schools this year. With the help of over eleven local and regional organizations, we are able to support 200 high school students representing 15 schools across the lower Hudson Valley. We cannot wait to see how the Envirothon evolves next year!”
The 2024 Westchester County Envirothon was cosponsored by the Westchester County Soil and Water Conservation District (a subdivision of the Westchester County Planning Department) and Department of Parks, Recreation and Conservation, with support from Soil and Water Conservation Districts: Dutchess, Rockland, Putnam and Ulster Counties), Watershed Agricultural Council, Cornell Cooperative Extension of Westchester County, NY Sea Grant, Westchester Parks Foundation, Save the Sound, New York City Department of Environmental Protection, Westchester County Office of Sustainability, and Rye Nature Center.
