Sept. 8, 2023 – The Conservation Division of the Westchester County Department of Parks, Recreation and Conservation is participating in the National Recreation and Parks Association’s (NRPA) Parks for Pollinators BioBlitz by hosting month-long events to raise awareness of pollinators and encourage community involvement by documenting the variety of wildlife found in our parks on the iNaturalist app.
Four parks from the Conservation Division are participating: Cranberry Lake Preserve in North White Plains, Lasdon Park in Somers, Lenoir Preserve in Yonkers, and Muscoot Farm in Katonah. The event is ongoing through September. The results of all the local BioBlitz events will be incorporated into the national campaign to show how parks across the country are supporting pollinators in their local spaces. Additionally, the data collected will help to inform land management decisions with the goal of increasing biodiversity and the health of our local flora and fauna.
Westchester County Executive George Latimer said, “The Conservation Division of the Westchester County Parks Department is a leader in the conservation field, always researching and implementing innovative ways to keep the environment of Westchester County preserved. By participating in the BioBlitz, residents can do their part in helping Westchester County’s environment for generations to come.”
Commissioner of the Department of Westchester County Parks, Recreation and Conservation, Kathy O’Connor said, “Our parks are more than just recreational areas, we have protected lands that are dedicated to preserving the natural environment. The opportunity for residents to participate in the BioBlitz offers the public an educational experience that is unique to Westchester County.”
