Vernal  Pool Monitoring

 

The Conservation Division has identified species of flora and fauna whose numbers have declined in Westchester County and has begun efforts to:

 

Monitoring a Wood Turtle population with radio telemetry, building turtle nesting exclosures

Encouraging the return of the Zebra Clubtail dragonfly

 Propagating native plants as food and larval sources for rare butterfly species

Providing habitat for rare snakes and other species

Managing meadows and building nesting boxes for rare birds and waterfowl

Constructing exclosures to study the effects of white-tailed deer overpopulation

Inventorying Vernal Pools

Managing habitats for Eastern Ribbon and Hognose Snakes
